Pela primeira vez, a MTV anunciou os nomes indicados aos prêmios do Video Music Awards ao vivo por seu canal do Instagram. Quase todas as indicações foram reveladas, apenas os artistas da categoria "Melhor Música do Verão" serão anunciados mais tarde.
A grande novidade do ano? Haverá categorias sem gênero definido, que incluem artistas e clipes do ano, em vez de uma para homens e uma para mulheres. Além disso, haverá também a categoria "Melhor Luta Contra o Sistema" para celebrar a resistência.
